History
Matsunaga is a district with small villages on the valley among hills in Obama-city, Fukui prefecture. History is told in "Zoku Nihon Shoki" written in Heian period, 8th century.Myotsuji temple was established by the great commander in chief "Sakanoue no Tamuramaro" wishing for peace in 8th century. The Hounji temple, Hiejinja shrine, Sakurasha Shirohige Jinja ancient tomb, and Hiyoshi jinja are nearby cultural heritage sites which are worth visiting.

Traditional Events
Traditional rituals are kept alive in Matsunaga: If you visit over the new year, you can see the "Tsukuri Zome" ritual, which is performed for a good harvest. "Ta no kami matsuri" is celebrated when rice planting is finished in June, "Mushi Okuri" during the Bon, in midsummer.

NATURE
Nature
Central Watershed of Japan spreads south in Matsunaga. The rains that feed the rice fields here flow north, falling 100 feet (30m) over the Sanba noTaki waterfall into Wakasa Bay. A 300 year traditional vinegar brewery is blessed with the clear water.

AGROFORESTRY
Agroforestry
Beautiful rice fields lie at the foot of the mountains in Matsunaga. The people of Matsunaga and the Eiko Nosan farm have cultivated this land for generations and hope to do so forever. Local people have visited the forests to gather fuel for their homes until recently.
